Had an email from Andy Weir this morning (not a personal one to me (more’s the pity), I subscribe to his blog) explaining how he’s sold the rights to ‘The Martian’ and a hardback version will be coming out in 2014.
This is great news as I loved the book and will likely buy it when it comes out in tree-form, but a key part of the deal appears to be the removal of the kindle version of the story on April 30th 2013.
In Andy’s own words:
The publication agreement grants them all worldwide rights, including eBook rights. Because of this, the Kindle version of The Martian will be coming down on April 30th, 2013 at the end of the day.
So if any of you or your friends wanted to grab a copy of The Martian, you’ll have to do it before then. Between April 31, 2013 and the release of the hardcover edition, The Martian will not be available in any format at all. Crown may or may not decide to post an ebook edition. If they do it will almost certainly be after the hardcover comes out.
Just letting you know. This is your last chance for a while to get a copy.
So, if you want to read it electronically (at least for a while), go grab it now. I can heartily recommend it. If you’re not sure go read my review here. It’s ace (the book, not my review).
